The Dedication Spread

Hands-down my favorite part of preserving a family’s recipes is receiving the heartfelt words inside the Dedication Spread. Whatever message a client chooses to convey in these pages reinforces to me why I started Preserved Press, and makes me feel honored to help shepherd a family’s culinary legacy. There are so many ways to approach the Dedication Spread, and each version is just as good as the previous. I really love how each approach uniquely speaks to the personality of the family.

Keeping time.

This dedication spread features images of generations of women in the family.

What Is the Dedication Spread?

The Dedication Spread is an optional 2-page spread that follows the Table of Contents, and precedes the recipes of your custom cookbook. The left page of the spread typically features a photograph, and right page features a message that the client wants to convey to the recipient(s).

Keep it classic.

A large scale black & white photo makes a wonderful impression.

What kind of photograph should I use?

This is entirely up to you! Some of my favorite dedication spreads have included old black & white photos of a grandmother or other family member. You could have family group shots, a photograph of your favorite meal, a shot of your mom cooking in the kitchen, etc.

All photographs should be at high resolution for print (300 dpi or higher). So when choosing an old photograph, I recommend scanning to ensure best quality. One large photograph makes for an impressive impact; however, you can go up to 4 photos on the page.

From all of us.

In this case, the gifters use their images in the dedication spread.

What should the dedication say?

The message is where you can get really creative. First, consider to whom you’re dedicating the book: to your mom, your children, your spouse, a group of people? This will help guide your message. Maybe you’d like to share why you created the book, how the recipient has inspired you, a favorite food memory or two, or even take the opportunity to impart some sage cooking advice! I even had one client put their favorite food quote in place of a lengthy dedication.

A paragraph of 5 sentences or so is a good minimum, and you can go up to around 300 words.

Get creative.

Writing not your thing? Use a favorite food quote in its place.

In Summary

Don’t skip out on the Dedication Spread! Include names so that someone in 50 years can associate those family members with the pages of the book. Share the stories, and continue making memories around the table with the food that you love!
